Sisters Erica and Tina Atkins say they chose the name Mary Mary because as Erica explains, 'We were thinking of the Marys in the Bible and there are two specifically: Mary Magdalene and Mary, mother of Jesus who were very instrumental in His ministry'. Listening to the album, perhaps it's also a statement of their own musical ministry - inspiring the Marys in the church whilst also reaching out to those in the world who have not yet experienced a life changing encounter with Jesus.
Certainly the duo are in a unique position after signing a mainstream deal with Columbia Records and are already making a huge impact on the R&B, pop and dance scene, despite their very outright 'Gospel' lyrics. Indeed, the pull of chart success hasn't dampened the zeal with which they sing of their Saviour and with producer Warryn Campbell (Boyz II Men, Brandy, Dru Hill) adding his talents to the project, it's no surprise that Mary Mary have delivered a powerful punchy funky R&B gospel set, that is earning huge respect.
The debut album brings together a variety of styles placing the stylish funk of Shackles (Praise You), Joy and I Got It alongside powerful ballads like One Minute, What A Friend and Still My Child. If you're a gospel lover you'll already know that Erica and Tina aren't novices having had songs featured on the soundtracks to Prince of Egypt and Dr Doolittle. They also penned songs for Yolanda Adams and it was their song writing which originally attracted the interest of EMI publishing. Highly talented with huge opportunities, Mary Mary are shaping up to be a duo who will make a major impact on modern music and it all starts here!
