This world-renowned choral group has a reputation for tackling very diverse music and this latest release really sums up the breadth of music enjoyed at Wells. Spirituals and Prieres is a collection of prieres (prayers set to music) and a fascinating set of choral arrangements of spirituals. The main part of the CD tackles material from composers ranging from Franz Schubert to Cecil Armstrong-Gibbs and Leos Janacek. One beautiful section contains the four small prieres composed by Francis Poulenc inspired by the prayers of St Francis of Assisi. The CD closes with recordings of spirituals, including the title song and a fresh arrangement of Swing Low Sweet Chariot. The results are breathtaking and beautiful.
