From their roots in the heavy rock of the 1970's and the pounding rhythms and searing guitar solos of the 1980's, Revival sees the band returning to their musical roots. Think of all the things you love about Petra, maybe it's John Schlitt's soaring vocals, Bob Hartman's incredible guitar or the band's driving rock rhythms. Well, it's all here on Revival. More than a quarter of a century in rock'n'roll ministry, Petra release a landmark 20th album and it's a return to Petra Praise! Revival is the third time in which the band have explored worship territory and in some ways it's fitting that they do so now when we're in the middle of a worship revival. Petra can easily be credited with being the first modern Christian rock band to embrace worship long before it was fashionable. For Revival the band have teamed up with former Sonicflood members Jason Halbert and Dwayne Larring to record a thoroughly state-of-the-art rock worship album which draws heavily on the British scene. Singer John Schlitt sounds on top form with a powerhouse vocal performance whilst the pounding drums of Louie Weaver propel the whole thing along. Guitarist Bob Hartman explores new delicate textures for some of the quieter moments whilst being unafraid to turn it up when the band rock out. That trio is joined by long time friend, and former member of mainstream rock outfit The Outlaws, Rick Cua on bass. The result is a magnificent return to form and an album like all their classic albums, packed with songs that inspire, provoke and lift the listener. Better is One Day and an updated version of Amazing Grace are classic Petra ballads, whilst their take on Chris Tomlin's The Noise We Make sees the band rocking out with an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink production. Musically, Halbert and Larring have created a whole new musical canvas for Petra. Yet they've left plenty of space for a classic rock band to do what they do best. The gritty version of Jesus, Friend of Sinners is a strong reminder that these guys mean business. If you loved Petra in their heyday, then you're going to want to snap this up and if you're too young to have fully appreciated their impact on Christian music, here's a rock band every bit as relevant in the 21st century as when they first began.
