Mixing Britpop with seventies powerpop and a few original sixties influences, The Elms may be from America but their musical heart is in the UK! A full-on rock'n'roll sound that is fun and energetic, there are echoes of Oasis in there somewhere but one thing stands out, these are great songs and performances that grab you by the lapels and demand attention. Perhaps it isn't surprising that the British influences bleed through their music since songwriter and vocalist Owen Thomas has a Welsh father! Owen pens songs that are sometimes sung Godward and at other times act as signposts to guide listeners through the challenges of life and faith. Owen's not afraid of dealing with some deep issues but, even then, the music drives along, so you get Who Got The Meaning?, with its jangling guitars and bright brass section, contrasted by the classy string sounds that give the more acoustic Here's My Hand a powerful ambience. Another standout is the moody The Buzzing Won't Stop which is a metaphor for the voice of God whispering quietly into our souls. The perfect rock album to act as a summer soundtrack, The Elms blend melody, mood and message into an explosive album and The Big Surprise is a must have album for rock fans everywhere.
